What symptoms should lead to a thyroid function screening?

  • Children: drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, short stature, delayed growth and maturation, obesity. In girls, also consider: menstrual irregularities, acne, excess hair (hirsutism / hypertrichosis).
  • Adults: weight fluctuations, mood swings, fatigue, drowsiness, swollen legs, dry skin, sensations of cold or heat, arrhythmias, tachycardia, changes in intestinal transit (constipation/diarrhea) or hair and nails. Also consider, in Women, before becoming pregnant – not only in terms of infertility but for the proper development of the embryo and later the fetus – and in Men - in the context of studying infertility and sexual dysfunction.
  • Elderly – in the context of stroke (cerebrovascular accident), in the context of dementia, weakness or even depression, in addition to all those already described for adults.
  • Other specific circumstances – when patients undergo treatments that may interfere with the thyroid, such as pharmacological treatment with lithium, treatments for hepatitis C, taking Amiodarone (a heart rate medication), neck radiotherapy, among others.

Is there a specific age at which thyroid problems develop?

There is no specific age, and it can appear throughout life.

When should parathyroids be evaluated?

Whenever there are clinical changes or changes in complementary diagnostic tests and in some family/genetic cases.

Some pathologies such as osteoporosis, renal lithiasis (kidney stones) or chronic kidney disease require an evaluation of parathyroid pathology.
