Biography of Dr. Selma Souto
Dr. Selma Souto is a doctor specializing in Endocrinology and Nutrition, with special interest and differentiation in the areas of Overweight and Obesity, Obstetric Endocrinology, polycystic ovary syndrome and women's hormonal health.
She has a degree in Medicine from Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and completed a specific training internship in Endocrinology and Nutrition at the São João Hospital and University Center. He completed a three-month internship at the Endocrinology Service at Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, especially in the areas of Obesity and Obstetric Endocrinology.
He worked as an endocrinologist at Endocrinology Service of Braga Hospital, where he was responsible for the Medical Internship in Endocrinology, and where he was part of multidisciplinary teams for the treatment of Obesity, Thyroid Oncology and Obstetric Endocrinology.
Later, he joined the team of Endocrinology Service of the São João Hospital and University Center, having been responsible for the creation of the Non-Surgical Treatment of Obesity clinic and also a member of the Integrated Obesity Responsibility Center. At this hospital, he also joined the Endocrinology and Pregnancy team.
At the Hospital de Braga and the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário São João, she was a training supervisor for interns in Endocrinology and Nutrition, General and Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine.
She was a guest lecturer at Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, having taught classes on various endocrine pathologies, particularly obesity. He taught seminars in the Endocrinology program of the Medicine course at the School of Health Sciences of the University of Minho.
He is currently Vice-President of Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (triennium 2024-2026).
For six years he was a member of the board of directors of Portuguese Society for the Study of Obesity, as Secretary-General (2016-2018 and 2019-2021 trienniums).
He is a member of several national and international scientific societies in the field of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the College of Endocrinology and Nutrition Specialty Order of Physicians.
She was the principal investigator of clinical trials in the area of Obesity and Diabetes.
She was the author and co-author of more than 20 book chapters in the area of Obesity and Diabetes, highlighting the coordination of the writing of the book “Manual of Non-Surgical Treatment of Adult Obesity”.
She has taught over 30 courses on obesity, insulin therapy, and thyroid pathology. She contributes annually to the Obesity Course of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Obesity.
Published more than 50 scientific articles as an author and co-author in national and international scientific journals, especially in the areas of Obesity and Diabetes.
Presented more than 300 conferences or lectures at national and international meetings.
